Water conditions are excellent today with no sargassum detected and clear water. A good day to be on the beach.
December through May. Barbuda sits south of the main Caribbean sargassum belt and typically has very low seaweed. Hurricane Maria (2017) devastated the island but it has largely recovered.
Near-empty pink sand beach, flat calm water on the protected western shore, and a frigate bird sanctuary. No beach clubs or vendors: bring everything. Water clarity is exceptional.
Barbuda was likely first inhabited by the Arawak people around 400 BC, followed by Siboney peoples even earlier. The island was colonized by Britain in 1685 and leased to the Codrington family for nearly 200 years: they ran it as a slave-breeding plantation that supplied enslaved Africans to sugar colonies across the Caribbean. After emancipation in 1834, Barbudans established a unique communal land system that persists today: no individual can own land, all land belongs to the community. Princess Diana visited Barbuda's beaches with her sons William and Harry in 1993, bringing international attention. Hurricane Irma in 2017 devastated 95% of the island's structures and forced a full evacuation: the only time in modern Caribbean history an entire island population was displaced.
