Caribbean Beach Conditions β€” May 2026: Where the Water Is Clear Right Now

May is peak sargassum season across the Caribbean. Some destinations are handling it well β€” others are getting hit hard. Here's the full breakdown so you can plan or adjust before you travel.

βœ… Clean Beaches β€” Go With Confidence

These destinations are currently reporting little to no sargassum and stable conditions:

πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡¨
Turks & Caicos
βœ… No seaweed detected
Grace Bay faces northwest β€” largely shielded from Atlantic sargassum currents. World-class water clarity right now.
πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ό
Aruba
βœ… No seaweed detected
Sits outside the main sargassum belt. Eagle Beach and Palm Beach consistently clear even in peak season.
πŸ‡§πŸ‡Έ
Bahamas
βœ… Low β€” Stable
Calm turquoise shallows. Minimal sargassum exposure in May. Cable Beach and Paradise Island looking good.
πŸ‡¨πŸ‡Ό
Curaçao
βœ… No seaweed detected
Leeward coast position keeps it out of the main sargassum path. Great for snorkeling right now.
πŸ‡§πŸ‡§
Barbados
βœ… Low β€” Stable
West coast beaches (Holetown, Payne's Bay) stay protected. East coast gets hit harder β€” stick to the west.
🏝️
Cayman Islands
βœ… Low β€” Stable
Seven Mile Beach staying clean. Calm, clear water with good reef protection from incoming mats.

⚠️ Watch β€” Conditions Variable

These destinations are seeing some sargassum but conditions vary by beach and day:

πŸ‡©πŸ‡΄
Punta Cana
⚠️ Medium β€” Worsening
East-facing Atlantic exposure. Seasonal influx building. Check with your specific resort about cleanup crews before booking.
πŸ‡―πŸ‡²
Jamaica (Negril)
⚠️ Low–Medium
West-facing position offers some protection but seasonal risk is rising. Seven Mile Beach still mostly clear.

πŸ”΄ Heavy Sargassum β€” Caution Advised

These destinations are currently experiencing significant sargassum. Beach conditions are highly variable and may affect your trip:

πŸ‡²πŸ‡½
Cancun
πŸ”΄ Medium–High & Worsening
May is peak sargassum season for Cancun's Hotel Zone. Beach conditions highly variable day to day. Active cleanup crews help but can't keep up during heavy influx.
πŸ‡²πŸ‡½
Tulum
πŸ”΄ High & Worsening
Open coastline with inconsistent cleanup makes Tulum one of the worst-affected stretches in May. Cenotes are a good alternative if you're based there.

🌺 Hawaii β€” No Sargassum, Different Things to Watch

Hawaii doesn't get Atlantic sargassum at all. All four main islands are currently showing calm conditions with low jellyfish risk. Maui and the Big Island have the flattest water right now β€” good for families and first-time snorkelers.

What Drives Sargassum in May?

May marks the beginning of peak sargassum season in the Caribbean, typically running through September. A large bloom originating in the Atlantic's Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt drifts westward on prevailing currents, making landfall first on south and east-facing coastlines β€” which is why Tulum, Punta Cana, and parts of Cancun get hit hardest.

Islands and coastlines that face north or west — like Aruba, Turks & Caicos, and Curaçao — sit outside the direct path and consistently see cleaner conditions even in the worst years.

What to Do If Your Destination Has Heavy Seaweed

If you're already booked somewhere showing red conditions, a few options help:

Ask your resort specifically. Some resorts have seaweed barriers and daily beach clearing crews that genuinely make a difference. Call ahead and ask what time they clear the beach β€” typically early morning is cleanest.

Visit cenotes. If you're in Mexico, freshwater cenotes are completely unaffected by sargassum and often more impressive than the beach itself.

Go early. Sargassum is typically pushed onshore by afternoon wind and wave action. Early morning often has cleaner water regardless of how bad conditions were the day before.
