#26: North America's 50 Best Beaches

Best Time to Visit

December through May when Atlantic swells are most manageable. Strong-swimmer territory: rough surf most days. Ideal for scenery, photography, and picnics; experienced swimmers only for actual swimming.

What to Expect

Dramatic cliffs, palm-fringed coral sand, powerful Atlantic waves, and near-total seclusion. Photograph it, picnic here, wade at the shore edges: but respect the surf before committing to a swim.

πŸ“œ Coastal History

Barbados is the only Caribbean island never to have changed European hands: it was continuously British from 1625 until independence in 1966, a 340-year tenure that shaped everything from its legal system to its cricket culture. The east coast around Bottom Bay faced the open Atlantic and was historically less accessible than the sheltered Caribbean west coast where sugar plantations and their enslaved workforces were concentrated. The coral cliffs framing Bottom Bay were carved by millennia of Atlantic wave action into a coastline that British sailors called 'the Scotland District' for its dramatic, un-Caribbean character. Barbados played a crucial role in the spread of sugar cultivation across the New World: planters from Barbados introduced the sugar plantation model to Carolina, Jamaica, and beyond in the late 17th century.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.": Psalm 46:1
