Menorca's coastline has been shaped by 4,000 years of civilization: the island's prehistoric talayotic culture left more megalithic monuments per square kilometer than almost anywhere on Earth. Cala Macarella sits within a limestone kariff carved by millennia of wave action, sheltered by dense Mediterranean garrigue (scrubland) that prevented large-scale development. Menorca was a British possession for most of the 18th century: Port Mahon was the Royal Navy's preferred winter anchorage in the Mediterranean, and the island changed hands between Britain, France, and Spain four times before 1802. The Biosphere Reserve designation in 1993 legally protected coves like Macarella from the mass tourism development that overtook Ibiza and Mallorca.
