About Cayman Islands Beaches

Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is one of the Caribbean's most consistently beautiful beaches — calm, clear, and well-maintained. Its west-facing orientation provides natural protection from the sargassum that affects more exposed destinations.

Geography & Why It Matters

Grand Cayman sits in the northwest Caribbean, south of Cuba. Seven Mile Beach faces west toward the Caribbean Sea, away from the Atlantic sargassum current. The island is low-lying and flat — coral-based, with brilliant white sand.

Seaweed & Sargassum at Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands generally experience low sargassum levels. Seven Mile Beach's west-facing position keeps it largely protected. Water visibility is excellent year-round — often 80–100+ feet — making it a favorite for divers and snorkelers.

📜 Coastal History

The Cayman Islands were uninhabited when Columbus sighted them in 1503, naming them 'Las Tortugas' for the enormous abundance of sea turtles — sailors provisioned their ships with turtles from these waters for over two centuries. The waters around Grand Cayman hold dozens of historic shipwrecks, including the famous 'Wreck of the Ten Sail' in 1794 — ten British merchant ships ran aground on the reef in a single night, and according to legend, King George III granted Caymanians a permanent tax exemption in gratitude for the locals who rescued the survivors. Grand Cayman today hosts one of the world's highest concentrations of offshore financial institutions, making it as important a crossroads for modern capital flows as it once was for Caribbean trade routes.

"Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; your footprints were not seen." — Psalm 77:19
