Best Time to Visit
November through April for calmer seas and sunny skies. The north-facing exposure can bring Atlantic swells in winter, but the bay's protected shape keeps it swimmable on most days.
What to Expect
Ultra-clear water, sea turtle sightings, excellent snorkeling around the rocky headlands, and complete solitude on weekdays. Bring everything you need: water, snacks, sunscreen. The hike is worth it.
📜 Coastal History
Saint-Barthélemy (St. Barts) was first settled by the French in 1648 and sold to Sweden in 1784: Gustaf III of Sweden traded a trading post in Gothenburg for the island, naming the capital Gustavia after himself. Sweden developed St. Barts as a free port, which established the island's tradition of duty-free commerce that continues today. The island was sold back to France in 1878 after a referendum in which 351 islanders voted to return to French rule. Colombier Beach was part of the Rockefeller family's private estate for decades: the rocky headland above the beach was their retreat: which kept it undeveloped and inaccessible, accidentally preserving it. The beach can only be reached by boat or a steep 20-minute coastal hike.
"He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down.": Psalm 104:19
No sargassum has been detected today. While some seaweed can appear here seasonally, current conditions are clean. Check the live card above for today's reading.
Colombier is only accessible by boat (20 minutes from Gustavia harbour by taxi boat or private charter) or by a steep 20-minute hike from the Flamands area. There are no facilities on the beach: no restaurants, no sun loungers, no showers. Bring everything you need. The remoteness is the point.
St. Barths (Saint-Barthélemy) is a French Caribbean island synonymous with understated luxury, excellent French food, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. It attracts a low-key celebrity clientele and is known for being quiet, clean, and well-managed. No mass tourism, no cruise ships.
December through April is peak season with ideal beach weather. August through October is hurricane season: most luxury villas discount rates significantly during this period, but risks are higher. The island has historically recovered quickly from storms. Gustavia's New Year's Eve is legendary.
