Conditions are good today. Seaweed levels are low and the water is clear. No significant concerns.
If your goal is a swimmable lagoon with easy wading, Elafonissi is usually the safer bet. If your goal is dramatic color, a huge panoramic setting, and one of the most iconic beach views in Greece, Balos is the better target when conditions are calm.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spot. May, June, and September usually give you warm enough water, strong clarity, and fewer crowds than peak summer. July and August can still be beautiful, but both beaches get heavily trafficked and midday parking, boat queues, and photo crowds become part of the experience.
Wind matters more than seaweed here. Crete does not deal with Caribbean sargassum patterns, so the main condition variables are chop, visibility, and whether the trip still feels worth the effort.
Choose Elafonissi if you want shallow water, easy wading, and a more forgiving beach day with kids or non-swimmers. The lagoon setup makes it one of the easiest headline beaches in Greece to actually enjoy once you arrive.
Choose Balos if you care most about scenery and iconic color gradients. It often delivers the bigger visual payoff, but it is less frictionless because of the access route and exposure to wind.
Water is typically very clear. Native seagrass may appear in small amounts and is normal, but invasive sargassum is not a defining issue in Crete. Instead, pay attention to wind, summer crowding, and whether you are planning a full beach day or a shorter scenic stop.
