Conditions are mixed today. Seaweed is low, but there are other factors worth checking. See the live conditions card above for today's full picture.
The clifftop viewpoints along the Fajara coast offer some of the most dramatic sunset panoramas in the country, with the Atlantic stretching unbroken to the horizon. The Fajara Club: a British colonial-era institution: offers golf, tennis, and a swimming pool to members and guests, adding an old-world charm to the beach experience.
November through May is the dry season, identical to the rest of The Gambia. The Fajara area tends to be slightly cooler than the more built-up Kololi strip due to the sea breeze and the less dense development. December through February is the peak season. Shoulder months (November, April–May) offer good value with fewer crowds.
A quieter, less commercial beach experience than Kololi, with the same quality of Atlantic swimming. The clifftop walk between Fajara and Bakau is one of the nicest coastal strolls in The Gambia. Ngala Lodge has excellent West African cuisine; the Fajara area has several outstanding restaurants. The Abuko Nature Reserve (15 min by car) is one of the best small wildlife sanctuaries in West Africa: monkeys, crocodiles, and exceptional birdwatching in a compact forest reserve.
Fajara's history is tied to The Gambia's colonial period: the area was developed as a residential zone for British colonial administrators and later became home to embassies and international organizations after independence in 1965. The Fajara War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is a moving memorial to the soldiers of the Gambia Regiment and other Allied forces who died in West Africa during World War II. The Gambia's peaceful democratic transition since 2017 (after 22 years under Yahya Jammeh's autocratic rule) has been one of Africa's notable recent political success stories.
