Beach water quality is fine today, but weather, surf, or safety conditions are worth checking before you go. See the live conditions card above.
May through September when Bermuda's air and water temperatures are warmest (water 75โ80ยฐF). The South Shore can see Atlantic swells year-round: check wave height before swimming.
Pink sand, turquoise water, sandstone cove formations, a beach bar and equipment rentals, and moderate South Shore waves. Calm days are excellent for swimming; bigger swell days are dramatic but for strong swimmers only.
Bermuda was first settled in 1609 when the Sea Venture, flagship of a Virginia Company fleet, was deliberately run aground during a hurricane to save the crew: the passengers and sailors, stranded for 10 months, built two new ships from Bermuda cedar and sailed to Jamestown, Virginia. Shakespeare drew on survivor accounts for The Tempest. Bermuda's pink sand beaches: formed from broken fragments of coral, shells, and foraminifera mixed with white calcium carbonate: are one of the rarest beach types on Earth, occurring only in a handful of locations worldwide. The island sits on a submerged ancient volcano whose crater created the perfect sheltered harbour for centuries of Atlantic sailing. During Prohibition, Bermuda became the nearest legal drinking destination from the U.S. East Coast, sparking the luxury tourism industry that defines it today.
