๐Ÿ“œ Coastal History

Le Morne Brabant: the basalt monolith rising 556 meters above the Mauritius lagoon: carries one of the Indian Ocean's most poignant histories. During the era of slavery (17thโ€“19th centuries), enslaved Africans and Malagasy people who escaped their captors sought refuge in the mountain's caves and cliff faces, forming communities of maroons (runaways) who defended their freedom for years. According to tradition, when a group of maroons on Le Morne Brabant saw a column of soldiers approaching in 1835: the year slavery was actually abolished: they believed they were about to be recaptured and leaped from the cliff rather than return to bondage. They had died for freedom on the very day freedom arrived. UNESCO designated Le Morne a World Heritage Site in 2008 as a symbol of resistance.

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.": Psalm 23:4
