📜 Coastal History
Phuket's natural deep-water harbor made it a vital waypoint on the ancient maritime Silk Road connecting the Arab world to India, China, and Southeast Asia — Arab, Indian, Malay, and Chinese traders called at the island for centuries before European contact, drawn by its tin mines and sheltered anchorage. In 1785, Phuket's defenders repelled a 30,000-strong Burmese invasion in a month-long siege — led in large part by the widow of the recently deceased governor and her sister, who disguised women as soldiers to swell the apparent numbers of the garrison. The heroism of Chan and Mook — the governor's widow and her sister — is commemorated by the twin statues of the Heroines' Monument, one of Thailand's most venerated landmarks, standing guard over the island today.

Avoid Phuket's west coast (Patong, Kata, Karon) from May through October during monsoon season. Seas are rough, some beaches fly red warning flags, and swimming can be dangerous. November through April is ideal for west coast Phuket beaches.
Phuket water temperature ranges from 82–86°F (28–30°C) year-round — consistently warm and tropical. The Andaman Sea maintains comfortable temperatures throughout the year, even during monsoon season when swimming is restricted by wave height rather than temperature.
Box jellyfish are present in Thai waters, particularly during rainy season. They are more common in some areas than others. Always heed posted beach warnings. Vinegar is the recommended treatment for box jellyfish stings — resorts and lifeguards typically keep it on hand.
Kata Beach and Kata Noi are considered the most beautiful — better maintained than Patong and excellent for snorkeling. Surin Beach is upscale and photogenic. Nai Harn Beach in the south is a local favorite with fewer tourists. Patong is the most social with the most facilities.
