Playa Gaviota Azul sits at Punta Cancun: the tip of the Hotel Zone: surrounded by the most walkable stretch of bars, beach clubs, and resorts in Cancun. It is a great beach when conditions are clear. The tradeoff is full Caribbean exposure: when sargassum is active, this stretch collects it. Cleanup crews work the shoreline daily, but heavy pulses can overwhelm them by morning.

Extremely poor beach conditions today with dangerous surf and heavy sargassum. Stay out of the water and monitor local updates.
When conditions are good, the water runs a vivid blue-green, the beach is wide enough to spread out, and the energy is high. When sargassum is active: particularly June through September: the same open exposure that gives the water its color also channels incoming seaweed. Morning is often the best window before new material washes in and before the afternoon thunderstorms typical of this season build up.

UV Index at Playa Gaviota Azul
The UV index at Punta Cancun regularly hits 8β11 from April through October. At those levels, unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes during peak midday hours. The current reading is in the conditions card above. Plan your beach time before 10 AM or after 3 PM on high-UV days, use SPF 50+, and reapply after every swim. The afternoon storm pattern in JuneβAugust can naturally break the peak UV window, but don't count on clouds for protection earlier in the day.
Sargassum Here vs. the Rest of the Hotel Zone
Playa Gaviota Azul does not have a structural shelter advantage over the rest of Cancun's Hotel Zone. If the main Cancun conditions card is showing red or heavy yellow, expect similar here. What can work in Gaviota Azul's favor is crew access: being at the heart of the strip, cleanup teams tend to hit it more consistently than beaches farther south like Playa Delfines. That can make the same pulse look more manageable in the morning, but it doesn't change the underlying exposure.
Heavy sargassum is currently affecting this beach. Water entry may be unpleasant, and shoreline odor can be noticeable in impacted areas.
High to very high for most of the year. April through October regularly sees UV 8β11+. Sunscreen, shade, and timing your beach hours before 10 AM or after 3 PM all matter here. The current reading is in the live conditions card above.
Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is the strongest nearby option: more sheltered from direct sargassum drift and typically cleaner. The ferry from the Hotel Zone takes about 20β30 minutes. Costa Mujeres can also run a bit better than central Cancun, though it is still exposed enough to collect seaweed during heavy weeks.
No. Playa Delfines is farther south in the Hotel Zone: wider, less built-up, and known for the large Cancun sign. Gaviota Azul is at the northern tip (Punta Cancun) with more of a beach club and nightlife atmosphere. Both share similar sargassum exposure since neither has natural shelter.
