Turquoise calm water, cenote diving nearby, reef snorkeling, and a mix of low-key resorts fronting the beach. Sargassum can arrive June–October: our daily tracking covers this beach specifically.
The Riviera Maya coastline was the heartland of the ancient Maya civilization: the Yucatán Peninsula supported millions of Maya people for over 2,000 years, and coastal sites like Tulum and Xcaret served as major trading ports connecting inland cities to sea routes stretching to Cuba, Honduras, and beyond. Xpu-Ha itself (meaning 'water inside the earth' in Maya, referencing the cenotes beneath) sits near several ancient settlements and cenote systems that fed Maya agricultural communities. After Spanish conquest in the 16th century, the coast was largely depopulated by disease and conflict. The Cancún-Tulum tourist corridor was essentially invented by Mexican government planners in the 1970s: Cancún was a fishing village of 100 people in 1970 before being chosen as the site of a planned resort city.
