Punta Cana's live seaweed situation is updated daily above. Because Bávaro Beach faces east into the Atlantic, it is more directly exposed to the sargassum drift than west-facing Caribbean beaches. Resort cleanup crews — typically 50–100 staff per major resort — begin work at 4:30–5am to clear overnight accumulation.
The central stretches of Bávaro Beach in front of major all-inclusives (Excellence, Hard Rock, Barceló) receive the most intensive cleanup. The far northern end near El Cortecito village and the Cabeza de Toro peninsula to the south tend to have more natural accumulation. Playa Blanca at Punta Cana Estate is often cleaner due to its more sheltered position.
December through March is the most reliable clean-water period for Punta Cana. April brings first patches as the Atlantic sargassum bloom begins. May through July is peak season — offshore mats can be visible even when beaches are cleaned. August and September see gradual improvement. By October the risk drops sharply.
Even during heavy sargassum weeks, Punta Cana offers excellent alternatives. Resort lagoon pools are always pristine. Saona Island day trips to the south frequently offer cleaner water. Hoyo Azul cenote at Scape Park is a beautiful clear-water alternative. Snorkeling at offshore reefs often has cleaner visibility than the shoreline.
