Water conditions are excellent today with no sargassum detected and clear water. A good day to be on the beach.
February through May and November through January for the calmest seas and lowest sargassum risk. June–October sees some swell and occasional sargassum on the windward side. West Bay stays calmer than the eastern shore year-round.
Stunning Caribbean clarity, reef snorkeling from shore, world-class scuba diving (80+ dive sites), white sand, and a relaxed beach bar scene. Most resorts are small and boutique: nothing like the mega-resort strips of Cancun. Ideal for travelers wanting authentic Caribbean alongside serious reef access.
West Bay Beach on Roatán sits within the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System: the world's second-largest coral reef: which the indigenous Pech and later Garifuna people navigated for centuries. Spanish colonizers arrived in the 16th century, and the Bay Islands changed hands repeatedly between Spain and Britain before becoming part of Honduras in 1859. Roatán's deep natural harbor made it a base for British logwood cutters and, briefly, a haven for pirates raiding Spanish treasure fleets. The Garifuna: descendants of West African, Island Carib, and Arawak peoples: arrived after the British deported them from St. Vincent in 1797, and their culture remains central to Bay Islands identity today.
