The Turks and Caicos Islands sit on the Caicos Bank: an extensive shallow limestone platform formed by coral reef growth over millions of years. The Lucayan people (part of the Taíno civilization) inhabited the islands for centuries before Columbus, possibly making landfall here on his 1492 voyage: Grand Turk is one of several Caribbean islands claiming to be his first landfall in the Americas. The islands became a major center of the salt trade in the 17th–19th centuries; Bermudians established salt raking operations that made Turks the world's primary salt supplier for the Atlantic cod-fishing industry. Taylor Bay's extraordinary shallows: where sandbars extend hundreds of meters into the Caribbean: are the result of the same ancient coral growth that formed the entire Caicos Bank platform.
