Extremely poor beach conditions today with dangerous surf and heavy sargassum. Stay out of the water and monitor local updates.
The problem is the location. Costa Maya sits in the southern Riviera Maya corridor, one of the hardest-hit zones for Atlantic sargassum during the May through October season. The same warm shallow currents that make the water beautiful in winter carry massive sargassum blooms in summer.
When the beach is unusable, Banco Chinchorro Atoll: about 30km offshore: remains extraordinary. One of the largest coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere, Chinchorro has water clarity of 100+ feet, massive coral formations, sea turtles, sharks, and the wreck of a Spanish galleon. The atoll is completely unaffected by beach sargassum. Several Mahahual dive operators run full-day trips. If you're arriving by cruise ship and the beach is covered in seaweed, a Chinchorro dive is a far better use of your port day.
