Playa Marlín is the social center of Cancun's Hotel Zone: beach clubs, jet ski rentals, parasailing, and open-air bars line the stretch around km 9–10. It is one of the busiest and most energetic stretches of sand in Cancun. It is also one of the most exposed to sargassum. Check conditions before you go and plan an early arrival.

About Playa Marlín

Extremely poor beach conditions today with dangerous surf and heavy sargassum. Stay out of the water and monitor local updates.

The beach faces directly east into the open Caribbean, which gives it the vivid turquoise color Cancun is famous for — and also makes it fully exposed to sargassum. During the peak drift season from May through September, incoming seaweed can be significant. Resort crews clean the beach daily, but heavy pulses can overwhelm cleanup efforts by late morning. Arriving early gives you the best window.

Sargassum at Playa Marlín

Playa Marlín shares the same east-facing Caribbean exposure as the rest of the Hotel Zone, with no geographic shelter from incoming sargassum. Conditions here track closely with the main Cancun forecast: when the Hotel Zone goes red, Playa Marlín follows. The mid-zone location means it can sometimes collect slightly more buildup than the northern tip (Punta Cancun), where current movement disperses seaweed faster.

If the live conditions card above is showing red or heavy yellow, your best nearby escape is Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres (20-minute ferry), which sits in a sheltered bay and runs consistently cleaner than any mainland Cancun beach.

UV Index at Playa Marlín

UV levels in the Cancun Hotel Zone reach 8–11 from April through October. At UV 10+, unprotected skin can burn in under 15 minutes at midday. Plan beach time for before 10 AM or after 3 PM on peak UV days, use SPF 50+, and reapply after swimming. The current index is shown in the conditions card above.
