About River No. 2 Beach, Sierra Leone

Conditions are good today. Seaweed levels are low and the water is clear. No significant concerns.

Despite being one of the most naturally beautiful beaches in Africa, River No. 2 sees very few international visitors: a legacy of Sierra Leone's difficult history. For those who make the journey, the reward is a world-class beach in near-total solitude, with some of the friendliest locals in West Africa.

Best Time to Visit

November to April is the dry season: the only reliable time to visit. The wet season (May–October) brings extreme rainfall (Freetown is one of the wettest cities in the world, receiving up to 4,000mm annually), making roads difficult and the beach less enjoyable. The short dry season peak (Nov–Jan) offers the calmest seas and most sunshine.

What to Expect

A pristine, largely undeveloped beach with no major commercial infrastructure. The freshwater river at the north end of the beach is perfect for cooling off. Local fishermen work the beach and may offer fresh fish. Access is via the Freetown Peninsula road: hire a local driver or join a tour. African Princess Beach Hotel provides the only significant beachfront accommodation.

📜 Coastal History

The Freetown Peninsula has been inhabited for thousands of years by the Koya Temne and other peoples. Freetown was founded in 1792 as a settlement for freed Black Loyalists and freed slaves from Britain and Nova Scotia: one of the first such settlements in Africa. The Krio people who descended from these freed slaves developed a unique language and culture that blends West African, British, and Caribbean influences. During the devastating civil war (1991–2002), the peninsula beaches were largely cut off from visitors. Sierra Leone's remarkable recovery since then is one of Africa's great untold stories.
