Liberia's difficult 20th-century history means Robertsport has barely been discovered by the international surf community: making it one of the few remaining places on Earth where you can surf genuinely perfect, powerful waves in near-empty lineups. The local surf culture is warm and authentic, with a tight-knit community of Liberian surfers who learned on handmade boards.
October through April offers the most consistent swells with offshore (NE) winds from November to February making conditions particularly clean. The wet season (May–September) brings heavy rain but can still produce good surf for those willing to deal with the weather. The best combination of swell and conditions is typically November through February.
Multiple surf breaks within walking distance, board and fin rental, local surf guides, and the magnetic atmosphere of a town that feels genuinely off the beaten path. Nana's Lodge is the iconic surf camp. The peninsula's views over the ocean and the estuary are dramatic. Boat trips to explore the coastline and nearby mangroves are available through local operators.
Robertsport is the capital of Grand Cape Mount County: named for the dramatic mountain that rises from the coast. The area was home to the Vai people, one of the few African ethnic groups to develop an indigenous writing system (the Vai syllabary, invented around 1830). Liberia itself was founded in 1822 as a settlement for freed American slaves: the only African nation to have been established in this way. Robertsport's surf was "discovered" by the international community in the 2000s when a surf documentary brought global attention to its breaks, triggering a modest but meaningful surf tourism industry.
