The island was Danish territory for over 200 years before the United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million in gold — a purchase motivated by fears that Germany might seize the strategically positioned islands during World War I. The harbor's natural depth and protected anchorage made St. Thomas a coveted prize in four centuries of Caribbean maritime competition between Spain, Denmark, Britain, France, and ultimately the United States.
