Magens Bay ranked No. 36 overall on The World's Best Beaches 2026 North America list. The ranking fits what makes this St. Thomas beach different from more exposed Caribbean shorelines: a sheltered bay, calm clear water, easy visitor access, and generally low sargassum exposure.
St. Thomas sits in the northeastern Caribbean, north of Puerto Rico. Its position: and the sheltering effect of surrounding islands: gives it generally calmer conditions than open-ocean Caribbean destinations. The US Virgin Islands receive far less sargassum than the Yucatán coast.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas's capital, was one of the Caribbean's most important free ports during the colonial era: ships from every European nation called here to trade, making it one of the most cosmopolitan harbors in the Western Hemisphere in the 18th and 19th centuries. The island was Danish territory for over 200 years before the United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million in gold: a purchase motivated by fears that Germany might seize the strategically positioned islands during World War I. The harbor's natural depth and protected anchorage made St. Thomas a coveted prize in four centuries of Caribbean maritime competition between Spain, Denmark, Britain, France, and ultimately the United States.
