Conditions are good today. Seaweed levels are low and the water is clear. No significant concerns.
The beach here is managed by the Bay Head Beach Association, not the municipality: a private arrangement that keeps access controlled and crowds light. Victorian and Craftsman homes line the streets leading to the shore. It's a summer house destination in the classic sense: generational family homes, quiet evenings, and a community that comes back year after year precisely because nothing changes.
Bay Head typically sees 2–4 foot Atlantic surf in summer, with larger swells during coastal storms and Nor'easters. The beach faces east, making it exposed to the open Atlantic. Rip currents are a real hazard: always check posted flags and swim between lifeguard stands. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day during daylight hours.
Water temperatures warm from around 64–68°F in June to 70–74°F in late July and August. Moon jellyfish are common in summer: large and translucent, mostly harmless but unpleasant. Lion's mane jellyfish (reddish-orange, noticeable sting) also appear occasionally. After heavy rain, Ocean County may issue water quality advisories: check before swimming.
Bay Head is almost entirely summer rental territory: weekly beach house rentals dominate, typically booked months in advance for July and August. The Grenville Hotel is the landmark inn in town, a classic Victorian property a short walk from the beach. For dining, Waypoint 622 is the main waterfront spot. The Bay Head Yacht Club anchors the bayside. Point Pleasant Beach (just two miles north) has the Jenkinson's boardwalk with rides, games, and boardwalk food if you want the classic Jersey Shore experience alongside Bay Head's quieter character.
