About Cape May Beach

Conditions are good today. Seaweed levels are low and the water is clear. No significant concerns.

The beach faces southeast, which is the key to understanding Cape May's appeal: calmer, gentler surf than the north-facing Atlantic Coast beaches and noticeably warmer water. This makes it the best choice on the Jersey Shore for families with young children, anyone who wants to swim comfortably rather than battle surf, and travelers who want a proper beach town with outstanding food and architecture rather than boardwalk chaos.

Surf & Water Conditions

Cape May typically sees 1–2 foot surf in summer: gentle and ideal for families and young swimmers. The southeast-facing orientation provides natural protection from dominant northeast Atlantic swells. Rip currents are lower risk here than at north-facing NJ beaches, though lifeguards are still on duty and posted flags should always be observed.

Water temperatures are the warmest on the NJ Shore: typically 70°F in June, reaching 74–76°F in late July and August. Sea nettles (stinging jellyfish) are possible in July and August due to the warmer water: more common here than further north. After heavy rain, Cape May County may issue water quality advisories.

Cape May Diamonds & Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach at the very tip of the cape is one of the most unique beaches in New Jersey. At low tide, Cape May diamonds: polished quartz crystals carried from the upper Delaware River over thousands of years: wash up along the shoreline. Hunting for these translucent stones is a Cape May tradition that goes back generations. The beach also hosts nightly sunset flag-lowering ceremonies honoring veterans, a moving tradition that draws large crowds each evening.

Where to Stay & Eat

Congress Hall (1816) is the grande dame of Cape May lodging: one of America's oldest beach hotels, beautifully restored, with a wide wraparound veranda and beachfront location. The Virginia Hotel is a boutique Victorian property known for its Ebbitt Room restaurant, one of the best dining rooms in New Jersey. Peter Shields Inn does outstanding fine dining in a Georgian Revival mansion.

The Lobster House on the working fishing docks is a Cape May institution: a massive restaurant and fish market overlooking the commercial harbor, serving classic Jersey Shore seafood to enormous crowds. For a quick bite, there are excellent ice cream and fudge shops along Washington Street Mall. The Cape May Winery is worth a visit for tastings and tours.
