Busua combines West African beach culture with a growing surf scene and one of the region's most beautiful natural settings. The nearby 17th-century Fort Apollonia and the UNESCO-listed stilt village of Nzulezu make this corner of Ghana one of the country's most rewarding coastal itineraries.
November through March is the dry season with the most consistent surf and sunshine. May–June brings powerful swells that are better suited to experienced surfers. The long rains (April–June) and short rains (September–October) make the interior very green but can affect beach conditions.
Consistent beach break surf with instructors and board hire available. A relaxed fishing village atmosphere with fresh grilled barracuda at beachside shacks. Day trips to Fort Apollonia (Cape Three Points lighthouse), the Nzulezu stilt village, and the historic forts at Butre and Dixcove are all within reach.
The coastline around Busua was a key zone of the Atlantic slave trade, with a string of European forts built from the 15th to 18th centuries to control the Gold Coast trade. Fort Metal Cross at Butre (1598, Dutch) and Fort Apollonia at Beyin (1768, British) still stand nearby. The Nzulezu stilt village on Lake Tandane has been continuously inhabited for over 500 years by the Nzema people, who built their homes on water to protect themselves from hostile neighbors and slave raiders.
