Jamaica offers some of the Caribbean's most iconic beaches, and Negril's Seven Mile Beach is the crown jewel. Its west-facing orientation gives it a natural advantage against sargassum compared to east-coast Caribbean destinations, though seasonal risk still applies.
Jamaica sits in the northwest Caribbean. Negril on the west coast faces away from the Atlantic sargassum current, giving it better natural protection. The north coast beaches (Montego Bay, Ocho Rios) have moderate exposure.
Negril's west-coast position makes it more resistant to sargassum than Mexico's Caribbean coast or Punta Cana. However, as sargassum blooms have grown in recent years, some accumulation does reach even west-facing beaches during heavy seasons. Monitor conditions if traveling May–September.
Port Royal, once called 'the wickedest city on earth,' was the Caribbean's most notorious pirate port — home to Henry Morgan, Calico Jack, and dozens of the Golden Age's most feared buccaneers — until a catastrophic earthquake dropped much of it into the sea in 1692. Henry Morgan retired from piracy to become Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica, spending his final years hunting the same pirates he had once commanded. Bob Marley was born on the island's north coast in 1945; his music, rooted in the Rastafari spiritual tradition that sees the sea and the land as sacred, became one of the most globally influential cultural movements of the 20th century.
