Moderate sargassum is present today. Resort frontages may be cleaned, but independent beaches can have visible wrack. Ask locally which areas are clearest.
Beach Guide: Where to Go in Montego Bay
Doctor's Cave Beach is the crown jewel — a sheltered, crescent-shaped bay with powder-white sand, crystal-clear water, and facilities including lifeguards, lounge chairs, and beach volleyball. Entry fee applies but it's worth every dollar. The water visibility here can exceed 50 feet on calm days. Cornwall Beach sits just west on the Hip Strip and is a good alternative with a more local atmosphere. Walter Fletcher Beach (AquaSol Theme Park) is popular with families for its water park additions. Resort beaches at Half Moon, Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall, and Secrets St. James offer private stretches for guests.
Geography & Sargassum at Montego Bay
Montego Bay faces north-northwest into the Caribbean, giving it moderate sargassum exposure during peak season (June–September). It is more exposed than Negril (which faces west, away from the main sargassum drift), but less exposed than Cancun or Punta Cana on the open Atlantic side. The sheltered bay at Doctor's Cave provides natural protection, and resort staff typically clean seaweed daily. In practice, you'll rarely encounter significant sargassum at Doctor's Cave Beach even during peak season.
Best Months to Visit
December through April — dry season, low sargassum
Sangster International (MBJ) — direct flights from US, UK, Canada
📜 Coastal History
Montego Bay takes its name from the Spanish "Bahía de Manteca" — Bay of Lard — a nod to the days when Spanish colonizers used the harbor to export pigs to Havana. The British captured Jamaica in 1655 and the bay became a major sugar export point, with Rose Hall Great House overlooking the coast as one of the most productive (and notorious) plantations in the Caribbean. The legend of Annie Palmer, the "White Witch of Rose Hall," has been retold for two centuries — she is said to have murdered three husbands and been buried on the estate grounds. Doctor's Cave Beach takes its name from Dr. Alexander James McCatty, who donated the cove to the town in the 1900s, believing the waters had therapeutic properties. British osteopath Sir Herbert Barker wrote about the healing qualities of the water after visiting in 1926, and the beach's international reputation was born. Sangster International Airport, opened in 1947, turned Montego Bay into Jamaica's premier tourist gateway and one of the Caribbean's busiest airports.
"The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land." — Psalm 95:5

Moderate sargassum is present today. Some beach stretches have visible accumulation. Maintained resort frontages may be cleaner than independent beaches.
Doctor's Cave Beach is one of Jamaica's most beautiful — the water is famously crystal clear and the sand is powdery white. Some seaweed can appear in summer months (June–September), but resort staff typically clean the beach daily. Outside peak season, it's consistently clear and calm.
December through April offers the best combination of weather, low sargassum risk, and calm seas. Montego Bay is warm and sunny year-round, but July–September brings hurricane season and elevated sargassum risk on the north coast.
Montego Bay's water stays between 80–84°F (27–29°C) year-round, warmer in summer months. Perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and water sports in any season.
Doctor's Cave Beach is the standout — crystal-clear water in a sheltered bay, with lifeguards and facilities. Cornwall Beach is a good alternative. For resort beach experiences, Half Moon Resort and Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall have private stretches. Walter Fletcher Beach (AquaSol) is popular for families.
They offer different experiences. Negril's Seven Mile Beach is longer and more laid-back, with a west-facing position that gives slightly better sargassum protection. Montego Bay has more resort infrastructure, the Hip Strip, better nightlife, and easier access from Sangster International Airport. For pure beach quality, Negril has a slight edge; for overall resort experience and convenience, Montego Bay wins.
Use caution. Moderate sargassum may make water entry less pleasant, and other conditions may also be in play. Confirm local conditions before swimming.
